I Still Love Twitter

There’s a bit of unrest among the Twitter natives. The service is up and it’s down and…it is what it is.

What it is to me – I’ve been using Twitter for almost 2 years, and as I’ve said I’ve been on long enough to fall in love and out of love and back in love with it. Now 2x over. I also wrote a response to a Brian Solis post about how disappointed I was in their handling of certain seeming violations in their Terms of Service. Then I felt guilt about piling on without knowing both sides of the story.

Twitter was – almost – the first (anyone remember Dodgeball?) and despite scaling issues have done it better than anyone else. Jaiku is pretty much done (Is Google the place where Web 2.0 apps go to die? Jaiku? Delicious? Dodgeball?) with no movement since the acquisition. But now there are new option seemingly every day, Plurk, identi.ca and Posterous among them. FriendFeed is a big favorite among early adopters, with the opportunity to have longer conversations and comments for each of you and your friends items.

There are also push services, like Ping.fm and BlogIt, which can push status updates and blog posts to a number of services at the same time. Personally, I feel weird about that. I have many “friends” across the different services and it feels like I’m spamming them instead of concentrating on delivering unique content. My issues, not yours ;)

Twitter (and Facebook) is where the my conversations are and where I’ve met people who have become personally important to me. There are talented people, who I’ll never meet, who I look at their Twitter pages each day. I’ve had job interviews and opportunities because of Twitter and have met a ton of smart people who I now count as friends (or collegues). I check in to FriendFeed, I look at the other services I’m on – but those are appointment check-ins, not integrated into my daily workflow.

In fact – I still can’t get excited about Plurk – and I know plenty of people who are. I just can’t get past the interface (again, my issue!) and the whole karma point system makes no sense to me. Many of my connections love it and I plan on checking in every once in a while – it’s just not for me. On the other hand, I’m enjoying Posterous and the simplicity of emailing all of my updates, pictures, etc. It’s easy and fast.

Do the Twitter down times disturb me? More of a gentle to general state of annoyance. Do I wish they would set their business model? Uh, yeah (I’m sure they can’t wait to do that too). But I love the service and the team – both of which have changed the daily way I communicate with the world. And have brought me opportunities and people in my life that I would have never had before Twitter.

One of the services not on this list is Snitter and Adobe Air app that runs on both Win and Mac platforms.

It’s All About the Media Snackers!

I was tagged last friday by Geoff Livingston (who did a great video for his response). This meme was started by Jeremiah Owyang and has included amazing viewpoints from Connie Reece, Connie Benson, Chris Brogan, among others.

Jeremiah has also coined the term “micromedia” which is the perfect description of this social media subset.

Micromedia that I use:

- Twitter to update my network and co-workers on things I’m working on. Sometimes my updates aren’t such great content, but I’m really starting to focus on making them worth people’s time.
- Jott, which I use for mobile updates to my blogs, network and also to create reminders for myself.
- I send out short video messages on facebook (and I mean short, 20 sec or less).
- I’ve just started using Utterz this weekend while I was at PodCamp Boston. It allows me to update facebook, Twitter, my blogs, etc. while on the road.

How One Amazing Woman (and Twitter) are Sending a Girl to College

Beth’s Blog: How Nonprofits Can Use Social Media: Twitter, Facebook, Chris Brogan and 52 other people send Cambodian girl to college!

Yesterday, thanks to Chris Brogan, I had a chance to be part of something great.

Beth Kanter raised over $1000 in less than 24 hours to send a Cambodian girl to college by using her Facebook and Twitter networks (plus a ChipIn widget on her blog) to meet her goal.

I received a Tweet(s) from Chris Brogan, who had also blogged and and cheerleader-ed the effort.

The goal was reached in hours and it was amazing to be a part of something so big – and this was also a case study of Social Media happening in real time.

Thank you Beth for the opportunity and I can’t wait to meet you in person at Podcamp Boston next weekend.

Why I use Ning as my Digital “Hub”

I have a large (for me) and expansive web presence. I have two blogs (this one and Setting Contexts, my GTD blog), a Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Jaiku, Pownce, Yahoo!Mash, my Upcoming page, etc., etc., etc. A lot of these services were initiated under my jquig99 moniker. As a woman, I felt a bit vulnerable having these under my real name.

Then Brian Solis wrote his great post on Facebook as a Digital Hub. It was a post that rang true for me and helped push me to look at my own brand strategy. And I was all about Facebook. Still am. My network was deep across Twitter and FB, easy to build and maintain. I wrote a entry here responding to Brian’s post (I read Brian’ PR 2.0 every day – his perspective on what’s going on in Silicon Valley and the space is fun, informative and gives me a crucial West Coast window). In the comments Chris Brogan made a case for Ning (which I had used to build a Social Network for one of my clients). He also gave me some great feedback on my web presence and has since encouraged me to be consistent and aggregate my content. And he’s inspired me to start working with video (In a small way, so far). Bought a FlipCamera (thanks Geoff Livingston) that I can carry around with me so that I can talk to people on my travels, do video updates on my blogs, transcribe panels and sessions, etc.

But back to Ning. Ning allows you to develop your own social network. It’s modular, so you can add and subtract features on the fly.

In a couple of weeks I’ll be getting a new design and my own logo! I also decided it was time to use my domain name, www.janequigley.com, took the ads off and added some widgets – my upcoming page, my blog RSS feeds, video, my NewsGator shared links and a forum to stimulate conversation and interaction.

What’s challenging – building the traffic. It’s not as easy as Facebook to build my network. Ultimately, it’ll be worth it, as the readers will be here because I’m adding some value and (hopefully) people will want to be part of the forum conversations.

So any suggestions? Anything I should add?

Google Buys Jaiku

Congratulations to the Jaiku team – it’s exciting time for the company and they deserve to be rewarded for all of their hard work. Jaiku is a feature-rich microblogging service that has lagged behind it’s less-feature-ful companion, Twitter.

But – working with Google can be a cautionary tale. Anyone remember Dodgeball? It was one of the first microblogging services, where you could notify your friends (and crushes) where you were. Google also bought them and everyone was just as excited. It soon bacame clear that Dodgeball was not very high on the list of Google’s priorities, development lagged and momentum stopped. Frustrated, in April 2007, Dodgeball’s founders left to pursue other projects.

Now Google’s a smart company and I’m sure learned from that last go round. But before people start pointing to this deal as the "Twitter-killer" – let’s take a step back and reflect on history. Jaiku has already put the breaks on new users (you can still be invited by a friend) and are working with the Google engineers to develop a stronger service. Great – but the ball’s in Google’s court, not Jaiku’s, so we’ll have to see how quickly they turn this around.

Twitter will be fine, better even by competition.

Robert Scoble thinks that this isn’t about Twitter at all, it’s about Facebook. I think he’s right. With Google’s Orkut 2.0 coming on November 5th, it’s a whole new ballgame.

And maybe, just maybe, it’ll correct all of those scary, scary Facebook (and Facebook application)valuations. It makes my Bubble 1.0-survivor heart tremble.

BTW – another reason I love Twitter – Brian Solis of PR 2.0 fame, put out the following Twitter about the Jaiku story:

"Jaiku is a client of my agency FutureWorks, I’m hearing from writers that can’t reach google. DM me if u need anything and r on deadline." Awesome. He also thinks that Jaiku is more than a microblogging service, that its more of a lifestream.

I’ll defintely use Jaiku more in the future weeks and see if I can find the flow and integrate it in my life more. My friend Patrick is a fan – I’ve been putting it off, but now I’ll have to see if I agree.

Yahoo! Mash – First Impressions

Last night I was able – through a lovely anonymous giver at InviteShare (Thanks!) to get into Yahoo’s new beta social network – Mash.

Initial impressions
- The modules make it really easy to edit content
- No real way (besides email) to search for friends
- The modules are really geared to “fun” and “personal” (not business)
- Can edit background images and module colors easily
- Search box is for the web only
- “About Me” is obnoxiously cute
- There’s a Mash Pet
- One module allows you to see who’s visited your profile
- Can add you existing blogs by RSS feeds (by module)
- There’s a Twitter module
- The “Ego Boost” module uses your name and your friends

I’m sure that this is the initial release and that more is on the way. It’s going to be interesting on how quickly they adopt testers (users) suggestions. There’s not a lot of viral content and it’s not easy to build your network – which is the quickest way to turn off your users. But this is Yahoo! and I’m willing to give them the benefit of time.

Twitter’s Open Platform Advantage

Great interview with Twitter‘s Biz Stone (Transcript and Audio here). I love that they get that the API development has been a key factor in Twitter’s growth and success. From Twittervision to Twitteriffic, the apps built on the API make Twitter a more interactive, easier to adapt tool.

I’m waiting (and waiting) for Pownce to get this. The AIR apps are not my friend.
